Amid the plethora of game improvement advancements that have changed golf equipment over the past 20 years, there is one (no pun intended) that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough:

Shots struck off the centre of the clubface.

High-toe and low-heel strikes for all golfers fly a little further, don’t stray as far offline and feel a wee bit better through impact nowadays based on the design and function of modern face inserts.

Odyssey has applied that same principle to a new line of putters.

With an assist from parent company Callaway’s supercomputing capability the Carlsbad, Calif. putter brand utilized artificial intelligence in its new Ai-ONE and Ai-ONE Milled putters to design a face insert that improves ball speed consistency on putts struck off centre.

“Even the best Tour players in the world miss the centre of the face from time to time. And when you lose speed relative to an off centre hit, the ball doesn’t roll as far as you intended, so you miss more putts or leave them farther from the hole,” the company said in a release. “In Odyssey Ai-ONE we’ve created the most advanced insert in golf.”

Here is a closer look.

Ai-ONE

Featuring unique contours on the back of the face the multi-material construction of the new Ai-ONE insert increases the size of the sweet spot helping to minimize ball speed losses on putts struck toward the toe or heel.

Odyssey’s design team used aluminum on the backer of the insert to promote ball speed consistency, then co-molded a layer of the company’s highly regarded White Hot Urethane to the striking surface to advance the performance of the Ai-ONE through improved feel, speed control and consistency.

Unique to the design is a Panlite window, essentially a clear automotive grade polymer that, “allows us to showcase the unique topology of the back of the insert” Odyssey said.

Using a variety of off-centre hits during Ai-ONE testing putts finished up to 21% closer to the hole.

Tour staff members have had the new putters in play for a while.

The world’s third-ranked player, Jon Rahm, went undefeated at the Ryder Cup using an Ai-ONE Rossie S, and Sam Burns switched to an Ai-ONE Seven model at the TOUR Championship and then gamed the putter again in Italy as a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Other head shapes launched today include the #1, Double Wide DB, # 7 S and CH.

A second launch of Ai-ONE has been scheduled for February, featuring Odyssey’s Double Wide CH, Rossie DB, 7 DB, 2-Ball DB and CH and Jailbird Mini CH and DB.

Ai-ONE Milled

Ai-ONE Milled models are just as you would expect.

They feature a 100 % milled stainless body fit with an A.I. designed 100 % milled titanium insert (no White Hot Urethane layer or Panlite window) and use the same multi-material construction and back surface contours to achieve improved ball speed consistency and distance control.

Appreciating the player demographic that prefers the look and feel of a fully milled insert and putter head, the more premium Ai-ONE Milled putters achieve a 7 % ‘closer-to-the-hole’ average than a typical Milled putter.

Odyssey One T, Two T, Three T, Six T, Seven T DB, Seven T CH, Eight T and Eleven T comprise the initial run of Ai-ONE Milled head shapes.

Final Details

Ai-ONE and Ai-ONE Milled putters represent the next evolution in Odyssey’s Stroke Lab shaft technology. Each shaft is counterbalanced with 20-30 grams of weight in the butt end underneath the grip.

Interchangeable weights in 5, 10, 15 and 20 grams are also available for golfers to dial in a preferred head weight.

Available at retail and online starting November 3, Ai-ONE putters retail for $399.99 CDN, and Ai-ONE Milled putters are priced at $629.99 CDN.
